An Open Letter from Harold Young to All Alumni Thank you for your fine work and dedication while
interning at The Maple Counseling Center. The entire
staff and I hope you leave with positive memories of
your days and nights at the Center. Our goal
is to have one of the finest training programs in California
with in-depth supervision and an individualized approach.
We hope you leave with a better understanding of the
therapeutic process and an eagerness to continue in
the field of mental health. You may find that you are leaving not only an agency,
but also friends. Many of our former interns expressed
a desire to stay in touch with each other and the staff.
A small group started the Maple Alumni Network in October
of 2003. We’d like
to invite you to become a member even before becoming
licensed. For an annual membership fee of $50 you can join
the Maple Alumni Network and receive an attractive
package
of benefits that address many of your networking, social
interaction and continuing education needs. First, you will receive a Maple Alumni Network Directory
that lists all of the members and their vital information
including a photo. This will be mailed to you in February
of each year. The directory will be organized by name
and offer an index for office location and areas of
specialty. Quarterly updates and additions will be
sent routinely by email. If you do not have email,
you may call for a quarterly update. Second, TMCC will forward appropriate referrals to
Network members on a rotating basis. Building your
private practice is key to many of you. We receive
occasional requests for therapist referrals. These
referrals are often full fee clients. Staff will determine
the appropriate referral using those listed in the
directory. When the Center had long waiting lists,
we sent out an SOS and many former interns were willing
to take a lower fee client. With our computerized system,
we’ll contact the members of the Maple Alumni
Network first. Third, TMCC will offer a 20% discount on all the
Center’s
continuing education workshops. For the past three
years, the Center has offered an array of respected
speakers and will continue to do so. With all the new
Continuing Education requirements to maintain licensure,
the costs can mount up. Often the cost of these workshops
can be well over one hundred dollars each. As a Network
member, you will receive a flat 20% discount on our
already low price. Generally, the workshops will cover
the mandatory requirements of the BBS or BOP such as
supervision, alcohol and chemical substance dependency,
law and ethics, spousal or partner abuse, aging and
long-term
care, and HIV/AIDS.
Whenever possible, we’ll arrange a more intimate
discussion with our guest speakers prior to the presentation.
This would be limited to Maple Alumni Network members
and TMCC staff. We hope this will enable you to have
a quality encounter with a recognized leader in the
field. Fourth, Maple Alumni Network members will have two
free semiannual social gatherings where you can network
and reconnect with old friends and colleagues. Information
on the location and time of each gathering will be
sent to you when you become a member. Fifth, Network members will be notified of upcoming
events and opportunities in the psychological community
via email on a monthly basis. It might be an important
workshop by another organization, news of upcoming
legislation or a special seminar at TMCC. Network members
are welcome to use this feature to promote a workshop
or support group that you are leading. Sixth, you will be notified of the schedule for the
Monday trainings at TMCC. We continue to have new outstanding
speakers who give their time to train the interns each
year. These trainings take place on Mondays, 12:00—1:30pm. Last, but not least, you will have an opportunity
to share information about yourself in the Center’s
newsletter. This publication goes out to over 8,000
supporters of TMCC at least twice per year. It’s
the perfect place to let colleagues and donors know
about an honor you’ve received, a recently published
paper or book, or other noteworthy items. Depending
on available space and subject to editing, you are
even welcome to submit articles for publication. With all these wonderful benefits, we hope you will
join the Network. Please fill out the attached membership
form and directory information sheet. Sincerely, Harold Young, LCSW
Clinical Director
P.S. Don’t forget—the annual $50 membership fee is a legitimate business deduction. Back to Events Index
